When was the last time you mopped the house? Ideally, you want to do it every week or so—that way, you’ll be able to keep dirt and dust at bay. Why is that important? For one thing, it’s better for your health. After all, it’s not uncommon for mold, pollen, and other allergens to be lurking on the floors. Over time, it can build up, which can cause a myriad of symptoms. Not only that, but the debris can actually damage the integrity of your home. For instance, it’s not uncommon for particles to cause tiny scratches on the floor.
Given all that, it only makes sense that you’d want to invest in a good mop. But wait, what kind should you use? There are so many of them out there! Aside from yarn mops, there are ones made out of sponge, microfiber, and other synthetic materials. Heck, there are even robot mopping devices that will do everything for you!
On this page, though, we’ll be focusing on a certain model that comes with a jet spray—the Swiffer WetJet Mop. What’s so good about it? Why is it so popular? How can you make the most of it? These are some of the things that we’ll be discussing below.
An Overview of the Swiffer WetJet Mop
The Swiffer WetJet Floor Spray Mop can be used on virtually any type of floor—from hardwood to marble. Equipped with a dual-nozzle sprayer, it’s capable of dissolving even the toughest of messes. Not only will the cleaning solution loosen the dirt, but it’ll effectively pull it off the floor. Before you know it, the grime will be trapped within the cleaning pad. Easy to maneuver, the mop also comes with a reinforced handle that allows you to release the perfect amount of cleaning solution each time!
- Very easy to assemble—takes a couple of minutes tops
- Mop pads do not detach during cleaning
- Batteries last a long time
- Swivel head allows you to clean under and around furniture
- The handle is not the sturdiest
- Jet spray can clog up over time
- Can be costly to use in the long run due to solution and pad refills
How to Save Money With Your Swiffer WetJet Mop
The Swiffer Wet Jet is an excellent mop—with a simple swipe, you’ll be able to pick up a significant amount of dirt and debris from the floors. There’s just one problem—it’s not exactly cost-effective. For one thing, the pads are disposable. In other words, you can only use it so much until it has to go in the trash! You’d be surprised just how fast you’ll go through a pack—they don’t exactly last a long time. Before you know it, you’ll have to buy refills, which can be quite costly, especially if you use the mop on a regular basis. Not only that, but there’s the cleaning solution that you have to get as well. Remember, you only get a small bottle with the kit!
Don’t worry, though. You can still use your Swiffer WetJet while saving money—you just have to be a little “smarter” about it. That’s right, there are a number of things that you can do that can help keep the costs down. Just because you’re using the mop, doesn’t mean that you have to follow everything by the book! Here are a few ideas:
1. Don’t Buy New Swiffer WetJet Bottles—Just Refill Them!
The Swiffer Wet Jet is designed so that it can only use bottles of their cleaning solution. The way it works, you have to put the bottle upside down on the unit in order to use the spray function. Yup, that’s right, the hole that leads to the tank is only compatible with their bottle. Physically, you won’t be able to fit any other type of cleaning solution into the “slot.” Ultimately, this forces you to buy their refills—you see, this is where they get you!
Well, you know what? There’s actually a way to refill their bottles with your own cleaning solution. In other words, you won’t have to keep buying the refills—you can use the Swiffer with whatever product you want! To do this, you’ll have to remove the pesky cap on their bottle. It might seem impossible at first, but it’s actually not that difficult at all!
The first thing that you want to do is to boil some water in a small pot. Once you’ve brought it to a boil, place the Wet Jet bottle in so that the cap is covered with water (you’ll have to hold it upside down). Hold it there for approximately 90 seconds before removing it from the pot. From there, all you need to do is give it a good, hard twist. With a little bit of luck, the cap will pop right off (the hot water will have softened it)!
Now you can refill the bottle with whatever product you want. Don’t want to spend money on a commercial cleaner? Consider using a vinegar-water mixture—it’s cheap, and does the job well! When you’re finished refilling, put the cap back on firmly. From there, you can use it with the mop as usual by placing it on the body.
Pro-tip: Don’t want to have to boil the bottle every time? How about making the cap permanently removable? All you need is a razor blade, Exacto knife, or a pair of nail clippers. Once you’ve boiled and removed the cap, place it upside down on a flat surface—you’ll notice that there are multiple prongs on the sides. Ultimately, it’s these prongs that prevent you from being able to twist it off. Remove them and you’ll be able to remove the cap easily at any time!
2. Use Reusable/Washable Mop Pads Instead of Disposable Pads
The Swiffer Wet Jet is infamous for its disposable mop pads. Sure, they might be effective at removing grime, but one sheet will not last you long at all (remember, you only five of them with the kit). Chances are, you’ll have to use quite a few in order to clean your house. Before you know it, you’ll have to buy another pack of refills. As you can imagine, the costs can easily add up—especially if you’re mopping a large area. To give you a better idea, a box of 24 goes for $12, which is nearly 50 cents per pad!
Fortunately, you don’t have to use their disposable pads—there are other options that are much more cost-effective. For instance, you can make your own Swiffer Wet Jet pads. It might sound difficult, but it really isn’t. All you need is a few clean rags—you can get a pack of them for cheap at the dollar store. From there, you just have to cut it to size (you can use a leftover Wet Jet pad to help you measure). Once you’re finished, attach your DIY pad to the mop and clean as usual. When you’re done cleaning, give it a good wash with a bit of soap and you’ll be ready for your next mopping session!
Pro-tip: Instead of using a clean rag, you can also use a fuzzy sock. Simply slip it over the mop head and you’ll have yourself a good cleaning pad!
Don’t have time to create your own pads? No problem—you can just get some reusable mop pads. Essentially, they work the same as the disposable ones but instead of being one-use only, they can be used again and again. All you need to do is toss them in the washer when you’re finished cleaning—they’ll come out looking as good as new! What’s more, is that they’re generally more absorbent (most of them are made from a plush microfiber material) as well.
Where can you get them? On Amazon. There are various types that are compatible with the Swiffer Wet Jet—including the Turbo Microfiber Mop Pads which we reviewed and recommended here.
Not only are they machine-washable, but they’re extra thick—much more so than the disposable variety. With it, you’ll be able to pick up dirt, dust, pet hair, and more effortlessly! Given its thickness, you’ll also be able to use it to mop up liquids and spills. You can use Turbo Microfiber Mop Pads for any floor type including hard wood, laminate, bamboo, cement, tile, and stone. When you’re finished mopping, put the pad in the washing machine. Depending on how you use it, it can easily be reused up to 100 times! What’s more, is that Turbo Mop Pads are compatible with other mops too—so you can use it with other mops as well.
3. Replace Your Broken WetJet Handle With a Better One
The Swiffer Wet Jet is a solid mop but the handle isn’t exactly the sturdiest. If you look at some of the online reviews, you’ll see that many people have run into issues where it either breaks or cracks (with repeated use). Depending on the severity of the damage, it might render the unit useless, which would require you to have to buy a new one (the company does not offer handle replacements). Obviously, that would cost money.
Well, as it turns out, you can replace it. Seeing as how they don’t sell replacements, though, you’ll have to make your own. While it isn’t difficult per se, it does require a specific tool—that is, you’ll need a 3D printer. Yup, that’s right, you’ll be using it to print a new handle! The materials might end up costing a bit but chances are, you’ll end up with a much sturdier mop. Interested? You can find the necessary files on this page.
