Mops are great tools to have. Not only are they affordable, but they are incredibly versatile. Aside from carpet, they can pretty much be used on any type of surface; this includes hard floors such as vinyl, linoleum, tile, and granite. In addition to that, they are great for cleaning walls and ceilings. Depending on the design, some might even be suitable for cleaning countertops and bathtubs! Another great thing about them is that many can be used wet and dry. For instance, many people dampen the head with a cleaning solution; this greatly heightens its effectiveness. Of course, you can always use it as-is for dusting purposes as well. Either way, it comes in incredibly handy when it comes time to clean the house.
Why It’s Important to Regularly Clean the House:
- Too much dust and debris is bad for our overall health
- Cleaning helps to reduce allergy and asthma symptoms
- Lessens the spread of germs
- Helps to keep pests away
If you’ve ever walked down the cleaning section of a store, you’ll know that there are many different types of mops out there. As you can expect, each of them is designed for a different purpose. For instance, spray mops allow you to clean more thoroughly by dispensing cleaner directly to the floor. Similarly, steam mops sanitize the surface with the power of hot vapor. In addition to those, there are ones that are much more simple in design—essentially ones that consist of a stick with some sort of absorbent head. Interestingly enough, these mops are just as popular as they were in the past; this is particularly true for those that are made out of microfiber—a soft, absorbent material that is suited for cleaning.
When it comes to these kinds of “simpler” mops, they fall into two different categories—ones that use disposable mop pads and ones that use reusable mop pads (some even use both!). While both types are effective at lifting grime, the former is typically frowned on due to the fact that it is both expensive and bad for the environment. In contrast, reusable pads are cheaper in the long run as they can be washed and reused; they also don’t go into the landfill.
Today, we will be examining a particular type of mop pads—that is, we will be reviewing the Hygen Microfiber Mop Pads by Rubbermaid. Are they easy to use? How effective are they at cleaning? Can it only be used with Rubbermaid mops? If you’re curious to know the answers, be sure to keep on reading!
Rubbermaid Hygen Microfiber Mop Pad
Rubbermaid is a manufacturer of many household items. Founded in 1920, the American company produces a variety of items including closets, sheds, air fresheners, shelving, and laundry baskets. Under “Rubbermaid Commercial Products”, they also sell cleaning supplies such as mops, brooms, dustpans, sweepers, squeegees, and more.
The Rubbermaid Hygen Microfiber Mop Pad is made out of a nylon/polyester blends, which cleans 45% better than traditional string mops. Featuring a zig-zag design, it contains 17% more split microfiber strands than their other products; it also comes with “loops” on the back, which ensures secure attachment. Highly durable, they have been tested to withstand over 500 launderings. Ultimately, their double-finished edges help the pad to retain its shape over time.
Size: 19 x 6 x 1 inches
Material: 3-5 micrometer nylon and polyester blend
The microfiber mop pad is soft and just the right size for cleaning the floor. If you look closely, you’ll also notice that it has small scrubby fibers tucked in between, which allow you to scrub away those stubborn stains. Thick yet lightweight, the pads hold up very well without tearing or leaving debris on the floor.
As it is, these mop pads are only compatible with a certain range of Rubbermaid mops. Ultimately, the reason boils down to the method of attachment. Unlike other pads, that secure onto the mop head via velcro, these ones feature a hook-and-loop design; that is, the pads themselves have a layer of “loops” that attach to “hooks” on the mop head. This allows you to easily switch or replace pads.
Note: Due to the fact that the pads do not contain any velcro, you don’t have to worry about it getting caught on itself in the wash.
Does it Clean Well?
The Rubbermaid Hygen Microfiber Mop Pad is perfect for everyday cleaning. For wet mopping, all you have to do is pour a little bit of cleaning solution to the floor as needed (dampening the pad also helps). From there, you can mop away. Seeing as how there are scrubbing fibers built into the cloth, it lifts dirt and debris very easily. The only thing is that it might have trouble cleaning texturized areas.
If you want, you can also use it dry for dust, pet hair, and other small debris. Personally, I would recommend that you use it without a cleaner first to pre-clean, prior to wet mopping—this helps to get rid of all of the loose dirt that is on the floor. Alternatively, you can go over the area with a vacuum cleaner.
Once your floors look good, you can toss the pads into the washing machine (they can be removed easily from the head). Be sure to air dry them if you don’t want them to shrink! While it can be bleached, we wouldn’t recommend it as it shortens the product’s life span. Fabric softeners should also be avoided.
Cost and Price Information
The Rubbermaid Hygen Microfiber Mop Pad comes in two different sizes. At the time of this writing, Amazon has the 18” pad listed for $10 (down from $14.49) and the 24” version at $16 (down from $23.54). While it is not cheap, it is not particularly expensive either. Aside from Amazon, you can find the mop pads at various retail stores such as Home Depot, Menards, and Lowe’s (they are more or less priced the same).
Note: Packs of disposable pads are also available on Amazon. Compared to the microfiber ones, however, they are much more expensive.
Attaches securely with loop-and-hook design
Removes a considerable amount of dirt, dust, and hair
A bit on the expensive side
Not ideal for cleaning texturized floors
The Rubbermaid Hygen Microfiber Mop Pads is unique in that it features split microfiber, which allows it to pick up a significant amount of dirt and debris from the floor. Made to last, they can be washed up to 500 times. Relatively thick, it is great for wet mopping when paired with a suitable cleaner. When used dry, the pads are capable of removing dust and other small particles. Not only is it easy to attach, but it holds up very well over time. However, there are a few things to keep in mind about the Hygen. For instance, it is not ideal for cleaning the grout; it is also a bit on the expensive side. Overall, though, they are great if you are looking for something durable to clean your floors with.
