Oshang Flat Mop/Bucket System Review

Hard floors such as tiles, marble, and hardwood have to be maintained regularly. For one thing, you have to clean the surface. How? With a mop. If anything, it’s the best way to prevent dirt and grime from building up and that’s the last thing that you want in your home. It’s unsanitary, after all.

What kind of mop works best? It depends on what you’re looking for. For example, spray mops are a good choice if you don’t like the idea of having to clean with a separate spray bottle in hand; you can just pull the trigger and cleaner will automatically be dispensed onto the floor. Similarly, you can get a robot mop if you don’t have time to clean the house yourself. They might be on the pricier side, but you have to admit, they’re pretty darn convenient.

In this post, however, we’ll be focusing on the classic mop and bucket system. More specifically, the one by Oshang. Yes, they may be “old school” but they’re just as effective as other mops in cleaning the floor! If anything, they just require a tiny bit more effort on your part.

What is the Oshang mop head like? Can you extend the handle? How well does the bucket system work? These are only some of the things that we’ll be talking about in our review. So if you’re interested, be sure to read till the end!

The Oshang Flat Mop/Bucket System

Oshang isn’t a particularly well-known brand. As you can probably tell from their name, they are based in China. Currently, there are two places where you can buy their products—Amazon or their official website. Personally, I’d recommend the former as it’s easier to deal with any issues that may arise. Plus, you get to read some of the reviews that previous customers have left on the site (they’ve amassed well over 1,000 reviews since they first began selling on Amazon).

The Oshang Flat Mop/Bucket Set is designed for hands-free washing. In other words, you can wash and wring the mop pad without having to actually touch it with your hands. It even has a splash guard so that water won’t spill out when you’re cleaning it. As far as the mop part goes, it comes with microfiber mop pads, which are ideal for removing dirt and filth from the floor. In fact, it’s versatile enough so that you can use it for windows, ceilings, and other surfaces.

What’s Included

The mop and bucket system does require a bit of assembly. Given that, it’s not surprising to know that it does come as multiple parts. Here’s a list of everything that you’ll get:

  • 2 Microfiber Pads
  • 1 Mop Bucket
  • 1 Mop Plate
  • 1 Mop Handle (Consists of 4 Pieces)

Assembly: Start by connecting the mop handle together; simply align the pieces and twist to the right. Once you’ve done that, you can stick on a microfiber pad. Locate the three tabs found on the mop head and insert them into the corresponding slots on the pad.

The bucket is pretty self-explanatory. Basically, there are two “sides”—one for washing and another for wringing and drying. To wash the mop head, insert it into the corresponding slot and move the handle up and down; that will be enough to remove the grime from the mop head. To dry it, insert it to the opposite slot and slowly push down. There’s even a squeegee under the groove that’ll remove hair and other debris.

Last but not least, you get two types of microfiber pads—one that’s ultra-fine and another that comes with nylon bristles. While both can be used wet and dry, the latter is more suited for scrubbing away stubborn stains. Both go on the mop head exactly the same way and can be washed and dried with the bucket system.

Build Quality

Build quality is not something that you want to ignore when you’re shopping for a mop. If anything, it’s super important as it’ll likely determine how long you’ll be using it. Here’s a tip from us—get something with a metal handle (preferably aluminum or stainless steel) as opposed to plastic; it’ll last much longer.

How is the Oshang Mop/Bucket system in terms of quality? Let’s take a look.

As you can see from the pictures, the mop handle is made of metal—thick stainless steel to be exact. 22mm in diameter, it should be able to withstand most things. That is, it shouldn’t get bent or deformed that easily. There aren’t any plastic pieces on the handle that can break off either.

The bucket system, however, is made entirely out of plastic, including the bits and pieces inside. The good news is that it is lightweight so it won’t get impossibly heavy once you fill it with water.

Potential Cons

Here are a few potential cons about the Oshang Mop/Bucket system that you might want to know about.

Dirty Water Tends to Mix With Clean Water

There seems to be an issue with the bucket where the dirty water will flow into the clean water when you use the “dry” slot. In other words, your clean mop water will be dirty and you’ll be forced to change it, which can be a hassle. As it is, this is probably due to a design flaw in the bucket system.

The Mop Can Be Squeaky

Many people on Amazon have commented about the squeakiness of the mop and it’s true. Depending on your flooring, it can be very loud and squeaky when you’re mopping. For those who are wondering, the sound comes from the handle at the junction of the pole and the mop head.

Maximum Water Line Is a Sticker

The bucket does have a maximum water line that lets you know where to fill up to, however, it’s not embossed on the plastic. Instead, it’s a plastic sticker. Depending on how often you use the bucket, it may eventually fall off, which will make things confusing when you’re trying it fill it up.

The Velcro Isn’t Very Sturdy

There are velcro strips on the mop head that stick to the microfiber pad, however, they’re not very secure. In fact, many people have had problems where they’ve actually come off altogether. Obviously, once it’s fallen off, you won’t be able to use it anymore.

The Microfiber Pads Aren’t Too Durable

The quality of the microfiber pads seems to be below average. Use them regularly and there’s a high chance that they’ll wear at the point where they attach to the mop head. Some people have also mentioned that theirs shrank in the wash.

It Can Be Hard to Get the Pads in the Slots

The way the bucket and mop system is designed, it can be tricky to fit the mop head into the “wash” and “dry” slots. You pretty much have to align them perfectly, otherwise, they won’t go in. And sometimes the pad will bunch up when you’re turning them, which will prevent them from going in.

Handle Quality Issues

Some people have mentioned issues with the handle—that it’s not as durable as it looks. Judging from some of the pictures that they’ve posted, it seems to have to do with the plastic parts that hold the mop together.

Does It Clean Well?

The Oshang mop does a relatively good job of lifting grime (e.g. dirt, pet hair, dust) from the floor if you use it with a cleaner; the head is also flat enough so that you have good access under furniture and other objects. The only thing is you can’t really scrub with it—it tends to loosen if you apply more pressure and that applies to the scrubby pad as well (see the con about the velcro above). You also have to be careful about the dirty water mixing with the clean water in the bucket. If you don’t pay attention, you can easily end up mopping the floor with grimey water.

As for the bucket system, the “wash” feature works great as long as you’re able to fit the mop head into the slot properly. The same goes for the “dry” feature.” When you’re done with it, you can just drain the water by pulling the plug that’s on the bottom so that’s pretty convenient.

Who Should Get This Mop and Bucket System?

  • People who live in apartments or houses (the mop/bucket is fairly easy to store)
  • People who don’t mind the occasional squeak from the mop

Cost and Pricing Information

The product retails for $49.99 on Amazon. While it’s not particularly cheap, its price is comparable with those of other mop and bucket systems. Every now and then, Amazon also has it for sale. In fact, it’s currently listed for $44.95 with free shipping. Returns are also free if you change your mind after getting it.

As for replacement pads, they also sell those in their shop. A pair goes for $9.99, so it’s about $5 per cloth. If you’re handy though, you could easily make your own out of regular microfiber cloths.

One thing to note, however, is that the mop doesn’t come with any kind of cleaner so you’ll be responsible for providing your own. You can pretty much use anything as long as it’s suitable for your floors and that includes natural options such as vinegar.

The Oshang Mop and Bucket system isn’t particularly high quality, however, it does do the job. It comes with two types of microfiber pads and the handle is extendable for your convenience. The bucket is also designed to be hands-free so that you don’t have to touch the pad while you’re using it. Keep in mind, however, that the dirty water can mix with the clean water when you’re using the slots. The mop itself can also be squeaky when you’re mopping the floor.
