As you probably already know, there are many different types of flooring. For instance, there’s tile, carpet, hardwood, vinyl, and laminate, to name a few. Depending on what you have, cleaning might be a little bit different. After all, a carpet cleaner will do you absolutely no good if you have hardwood. For this reason, you always want to make sure that the thing you’re going to buy is suitable for your floor. To make things easier though, there are a few tools that are appropriate for multiple surfaces—mops being one of them. Highly versatile, they are made out of a number of materials from microfiber to sponge. If you want something fancier, there are even ones that spin or spray!

On this page, we will be looking at spray mops—ones that utilize a spraying mechanism to dispense cleaner onto the floor. To be more specific, we’ll be reviewing the O-Cedar ProMist Max Spray Mop. How well built is the nozzle? How effective is it at sanitizing the ground? Is it prone to breaking down? Curious to know the answers? O-Cedar is a popular brand of brooms, mops, and other household accessories. Founded in 1906, the company, which is based in Springfield, Ohio, is noted for their slogan—“O-Cedar Makes Your Life Easier.” Dedicated to cleaning, they sell a variety of products including gloves, sponges, scrubbers, plungers, and more. In fact, they were the first ones to introduce the dual-sided spray mop with washable refills. In addition to their online store, their items can be found in several major retailers such as Walmart, Amazon, Lowe’s, Target, and Home Depot. In 2003, they were acquired by Freudenberg Household Products, a German group of companies, that is headed by Mohsen Sohi.

The O-Cedar ProMist Max Spray Mop is one of their most popular products. Convenient and easy to use, it features a dual-sided microfiber head that easily flips—this allows you to clean twice as long without having to change the pad. Highly absorbent, the device can also be used wet or dry, depending on your needs. Perhaps the best part of all, however, is the fact that the cleaning pads are machine washable up to 100 times! As far as the spraying mechanism goes, it comes with a refillable bottle that you use for water and cleaner; after putting it in, just press the trigger on the handle and you’re ready to clean. No batteries are needed—the machine will glide effortlessly on a variety of surfaces; all you have to do is handle the spraying with the button.

What’s Included

The O-Cedar ProMist Max Mop comes with everything that you need to get started. These include:

• 1 Microfiber Cleaning Pad
• 1 Refillable Water Bottle

Just as advertised, the device comes with one microfiber cleaning pad that you can attach to the mop head. Similar to other models, you use velcro fasteners at the bottom to stick it on. When you’re done, just loosen the velcro and slide it out. Remember, these pads are reusable—just toss them into the wash and you’re golden. For the best results, however, you might want to skip the dryer as the heat can shorten its lifespan; air drying is probably a better option. Once you notice that the pads have become harder to clean (aka there are permanent stains), it might be time to buy some replacements—that shouldn’t be for a while though considering how they can be washed up to 100 times, according to their website, anyway.

In addition to the pad, the spray mop comes with a refillable water bottle that fits into the body of the device. To remove it, just press on the one-touch release button. From there, you can bring it over to the sink, where you can fill it with water or a cleaning solution. Just make sure that you hear a “click” after you put the bottle back into the unit or else the spray won’t work properly. If you find yourself needing a spare bottle, you can grab one from their website (more on that later).

You may notice, that this particular model does not come with any kind of cleaning solution. This is actually a good thing—for you can mix and use your own. If you’d prefer, you can even just use water as the microfiber pad is designed to remove dirt and bacteria without a cleaner.

Build Quality

Prior to buying a mop, you should always consider its build and quality. How is the workmanship? Does it seem durable? These are some of the things that you want to ask yourself when looking at a certain product. At the end of the day, you don’t want to buy something that’s only going to be good for a few uses.

Overall, the O-Cedar ProMist Max Spray Mop is well built. In terms of material, the handle is made out of some type of metal; however, it’s hard to say exactly what kind as the information is not available on their website. One thing is for sure, though—the unit is not “flimsy” whatsoever. If anything, it’s fairly sturdy compared to some of the other mops out there. Halfway down the handle, there is also a rubber grip that you can use for leverage when cleaning.

Below the handle, everything is made out of plastic; this includes the water reservoir, and mop head itself. Don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s shaky though—the construction is quite robust. For one thing, the refillable bottle is tough and durable. Given that you don’t accidentally step on it or something similar, it should last you a while. Similarly, the head is sturdy despite being constructed out of plastic. In fact, its plastic construction is one of the things that allow it to flip over; this lets you use clean with both sides of the pad. 

Also, the microfiber pad is large and thick. Couple that with the fact that it’s dual sided and you’ve got yourself a reliable cleaning tool. Featuring a wrap-around design, it easily slips onto the head in a matter of seconds. Once you’re done cleaning, you can either give the pad a good wash in the sink or throw it into the washing machine. With a little bit of soap, the stains will come out nicely. 

Lastly, the sprayer is put together rather nicely. Not only is it easy to operate, but it has great coverage.

Some Possible Issues with the O-Cedar ProMist Max Spray Mop

As great as it may be, the O-Cedar ProMist Max Spray Mop does have a few potential issues that you should be aware of.

One of the most common problems that people have run into involves the spraying mechanism—that is, the nozzle tends to stop working after a while. Unfortunately, this seems to be a widespread problem with spray mops; almost every model will have this issue in one form or another. In the end, it’s hard to pinpoint what exactly causes the problem; however, it might very well be a flaw in design. Having said that, many of these mops are able to operate just fine for many years. If you find that your device has stopped spraying, though, you’ll probably want to contact O-Cedar to see if they can offer you a free replacement. In some cases, soaking the nozzle in hot water may help if there is a clog.

In addition to that, the mop head has a tendency of detaching from the base of the handle—especially if you’re trying to get into corners. While it’s true that you can put it back on, the whole ordeal can be fairly annoying. To prevent this from happening, you want to be as “gentle” as possible when maneuvering around furniture.

Speaking of detaching, the water bottle can be hard to put back sometimes after you’ve filled it. To make things worse, it’s possible to “break” the mechanism if you insert it with too much force. Ultimately, what you want to do is to re-seat the bottle softly until you hear a “click”—this indicates that it has been put in properly. 

On the topic of water bottles, some people may also find that it’s quite small (especially if you’re used to using something bigger). Because of its limited capacity, you’ll probably have to refill it a few times during a cleaning session. Fortunately, its design allows you to fill it directly at the sink, which helps a lot. You just want to be careful when you’re putting it back into the unit for the reasons mentioned above.

Don’t worry though, O-Cedar does offer a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty for their steam mops. Even if you do experience issues with your unit, you can contact them for a possible replacement. At the very least, they’ll be able to help you out with your problem, should one arise.

Does it Clean Well?

The O-Cedar ProMist Max Spray Mop is great at cleaning different surfaces, especially if you use some sort of cleaner (the fact that the pad is wide definitely helps as well). Thanks to its dual-sided head, you can even flip it over for a “fresh side”, once the initial pad has turned grey (something that you can’t do with say, a Swiffer). That’s not all, the head also swivels, which allows you to clean tight spaces.

One of the mops biggest features is its spray nozzle. By pressing the trigger on the handle, you’ll be able to dispense an even layer of solution onto the floor—yes, it does cover the full width of the head. Given that you’re able to use any kind of cleaner, you can clean almost any type of surface from tile to hardwood. 

The Microfiber pad also features “Scrub Zones” that aid in removing dirt and grime. On top of that, it can be used wet or dry—wet if you want to do a thorough cleaning or dry if you want to do some light dusting. Our favorite part of it though, is definitely how it’s double-sided. With just that, you’re able to clean twice as much compared to most other mops. As a reminder, the device is safe to use on hardwood, vinyl, tile, ceramic, marble, stone, and laminate. Although the website says that it can be washed up to 100 times, it’s probably best to change them every 3-6 months.

What is the O-Cedar ProMist ideal for? With how compact it is, it can easily be stored in small areas. For this reason, it’s perfect for those who are living in apartments or studios. Given that you have a place to wash the reusable pads, the mop can also be great for office settings.

Cost and Pricing Information

For what it does, the O-Cedar has quite an attractive price tag. In fact, it is one of the cheaper spray mops that are available on the market. At the time of this writing, the set sells for $19.98 plus tax. To give you a better idea of where it lies on the price spectrum, most of its competitors are priced anywhere from $25 to $30; some fancier models are even more expensive. Considering that, it’s easy to see how it’s an affordable option.

But wait, there’s more good news—seeing as how the microfiber pads are washable, you really won’t be needing to buy any refills. Just from that alone, you’ll save yourself a lot of money (people who have used Swiffer will understand what I’m saying). In some cases, though, it’s nice to have more than one pad to work with (even with it being dual-sided, you’ll probably need to rinse it out multiple times during one session). Fortunately, they’re pretty cheap; you can easily get an extra for under $10. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to get them on sale. On Amazon, there are also some off-brand options, which are even cheaper (around $20 for a set of 3).

In addition to that, you also won’t be needing any fancy cleaning solution. As mentioned earlier, the O-Cedar ProMist Max Spray Mop does not require a specific cleaner; you can use almost anything, as long as it’s safe and effective for your floors. Heck, you can even use water and vinegar if you want! The point is, you won’t have to go out of your way to get a specific solution—you can just use whatever you have in the house.

Considering those few points, this particular steam mop really is a worthwhile investment. Sure, it has a few cons, but what product out there is perfect without flaws?
