O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop Review

In my household, I do the heavy lifting, the decorating and the washing-up, as well as half the cooking, and my wife does the cleaning. It’s not that I don’t want to clean, it’s just my wife and I have a different eye for what really constitutes clean, and I’m sure if you’re married you probably know what I’m talking about.

I have no problem getting the floor sparkling clean, but my wife invariably comes home, raises an eyebrow and announces that she’ll just give the floor an extra once over, ‘just to make sure’, and with some cleaning products, you can be sure that your floor is REALLY clean, no more so than with a steam mop. Today I’ll be taking a look at the O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop, which delivers a controllable amount of steam in just seconds, leaving your hard floor surfaces almost completely germ free, and it does it all without any chemicals.

The Microfiber Steam Mop from O-Cedar

O-Cedar have been in the cleaning business for a long time, since 1960 in fact when the company was founded in Springfield, Ohio. The company has a long history of supplying all sorts of cleaning products, including scrubbers, mops, sponges and gloves, and the company has always made ease of use and convenience the main focus of their product line. Known for their slogan of ‘O-Cedar makes your life easier’ and the company motto ‘Easy Cleaning for Real Living’, O-Cedar sell a huge range of goods online, and are these days stocked in major retail chains such as Home Depot, Walmart and Lowe’s. Since 2003, O-Cedar have been part of the German owned retail giant, the Freudenberg Group.

The O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop has been a welcome addition to the steam mop market, and it offers the highly effective cleaning efficiency of microfiber, with controllable steam to sanitise your hard surfaces without the use of any chemicals. It’s not only ecologically friendly, it’s also quick, steam is produced in just 20 seconds after you plug it in, but how does it measure up to other steam cleaners on the market? Read on and we’ll find out.

Build quality

The O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop arrives in parts and needs to be assembled before use. Almost every reviewer on Amazon found this product very easy to put together, simply snap the handle together and the mop head into place and you’re ready to go. There are assembly instructions provided and all agreed that they were more than adequate. Do note however that once assembled, the O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop is not designed to be taken apart again, so it is unable to be packed away again in its separate components for easy storage.

This product lives up to O-Cedar’s aim of making life for the user easy. Most users were impressed with how light the cleaner was, it weighs in at only 7.5 pounds with the mop head and pad attached. A Water storage container is within the upper part of the handle, and the total capacity is around 400ml, or 0.85 of a pint. A measuring cup (capacity 200ml) is provided to fill the water tank conveniently without spillage. Once the tank has been filled, the cleaner can be plugged in, and once the steam function has been turned on by the on/off switch on the handle, steam is produced after only twenty seconds. The amount of steam produced can be varied by a dial on the handle too. All users found the steam function fairly convenient to use, however some noted a few points compared to other steam cleaners on the market.

The O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop produces steam constantly, in order to stop the steam, the on/off switch must be deployed. Some users found this more convenient than other button activated, steam cleaners, while others found the constant steam to be less than ideal. Other users noted that they were unable to tell how much water remained in the storage tank while using the cleaner, relying only on the sound the device made to know when they needed to refill, however most users found that the tank had enough capacity for around 25 minutes of constant steam.

The electrical cable is approximately 18 feet long, and one user did note that this was a limitation that made the O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop potentially unsuitable for his large home, although it does seem an ideal size for smaller houses and apartments. One feature that all users agreed on was that this product is particularly quiet when operating, as adequately shown in a review video posted on the Amazon page, and it was also generally agreed that the cleaner is light and easy to manipulate.

As there is no facility to drain the storage container, the user must hold the cleaner upside down to drain it if they do not wish to leave water in the tank between cleans, and other users noted that the device could not be used on walls, as such an angle not only caused the tank to leak water, but it also stopped the production of steam.

The mop handle is lightweight aluminium, and easy to move, and it is also fairly long. The mop stands 51 inches high in total, or 4 feet three inches high, and all users found this high enough to use comfortably. The mop head, which is triangular shaped for easy corner cleaning is not huge, but at twelve inches on its longest side, the back, and nine inches on the other sides most users found it suitable for even quite large rooms. The head also swivels from side to side to get around chair legs and objects, and the handle will move to a lower cleaning position to get under chairs and low furniture without a problem.

One user did note that he found some spots of rust on the aluminium handle after about six months, but that was the only rust complaint from any reviewer. One other reviewer had the mop head snap off from the handle after a few months and he noted that the two components were held together only by a ¾ inch plastic tube, which was the cause of the break in his case, but apart from that, no other reviewers had problems with breakage between the mop head and the handle.

The O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop has over 732 customer reviews on Amazon, and 84% of them are either four or five star, and generally glowing due to the efficiency of the cleaner, which I’ll come to shortly, but there were 12% of reviews that were either one or two star, and the same problem was the reason for the bad review in almost every case.

The unhappy 12% of reviewers found that the steam system would fail to work, with many noting that this had happened after only one or two uses. Several of them insisted that they had only used distilled water in the storage tank, which has none of the minerals that can lead to clogging of the steam system after prolonged usage, and furthermore they claimed to have taken great care with the cleaner in the short time they had used it. Several other reviewers had got only a few months of use out of the cleaner before the steam system stopped working, and most considered the O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop to be a cheap alternative to other steam cleaners that wasn’t worth the money in the long run.

All in all the O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop is one of the cheaper steam cleaners on the market, and it is also light, efficient and easy to use. The unhappy customers who experienced problems with the steam system after only a short time were a minority of only 12% of reviewers, but even so, I would recommend you contact the seller about what warranty is offered, and whether returns are available, before you hand your money over.

Does it Clean Well?

Without a doubt, I can say that the O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop performs exceptionally well on tiled surfaces, hardwood and laminate floors, and on stone surfaces. Many satisfied customers were enthusiastic about the efficiency of the cleaner on hard surfaces. Many users with tiled floors found that it did clean without streaks, and those who used it on tiled floors found that the steam would clean the grout between tiles very well. Reviewers with stone floors also found this product to be particularly useful and perfectly able to bring a shine to a floor with very little effort, and although owners of wooden floors were equally impressed, there were a few dissatisfied customers who thought otherwise.

The particular feature of this product that constantly produces steam did cause problems for a few users with wooden floors. Leaving the cleaner’s steam function on over one patch of wooden floor can cause dulling or discoloration of wooden floors, and with some surfaces, the variable steam control may be needed to turn the steam down a little in case your wooden floor is too delicate for the full on steam treatment. Having said that, many customers with wooden floors were highly impressed with the ease and efficiency of this cleaner, and found it would leave both hardwood and laminate floors with a deep shine even without the use of any chemicals.

Probably the only function of the cleaner that didn’t meet with almost unanimous approval was the carpet cleaning ability of the product. The O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop comes complete with a glider that snaps over the mop pad and lifts the cleaner slightly off the floor, leaving it able to run over carpets with ease. Although several users noted that it could freshen carpets well, and was able to deal with small areas or slight stains, most agreed that it wasn’t particularly suitable for cleaning large carpets or stubborn stains.

Although there were a slightly concerning number of users who all experienced problems with the steam mechanism after a short time, almost everyone who used the cleaner agreed it was light, easy and convenient to use, and that it was a superb product for tiled and stone floors, as well as great for all types of woods floors as long as care was taken not to leave it in the same position for too long. For most laminate floor owners, I would suggest you check with the manufacturers recommendations or a flooring specialist before you use the O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop on full steam setting on your floor.

Cost & Pricing Information

At $69.99 the O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop is one of the cheaper steam cleaners on the market, and perhaps that is reflected in the complaints registered by some customers about the durability of the steam system. Once again I would check for warranty details and the return policy before you commit yourself, but if you primarily need a stone or tile floor cleaner, this is a great cleaner that does the job well for a fraction of the price of other steam cleaners on the market.

For the $69.99 price tag you receive two microfiber pads, which are super absorbent and our recommended pad type. The pads are machine washable and most users agree that they are as good as new after a machine wash. O-Cedar recommend replacing the pads after 25 machine washes, and replacement pads are available on Amazon for $8.99 for a pack of two, which is a fairly reasonable price considering their size.
