Steam cleaners are great—you can use them to clean, disinfect, and deodorize. In fact, they’re capable of killing 99.9% of all germs. What’s more, is that they’re eco-friendly. After all, you don’t need anything but water. In other words, you won’t have to expose yourself to any chemicals. Not only is it better for your health, but it’ll also save you money in the long run!
On top of that, they’re highly versatile. For example, you can use them to clean windows, cooktops, walls, as well as the floor. They don’t have to be expensive either; there are many at-home products that you can get for a couple hundred dollars. If anything, they’ll serve you a lot better than a general cleaning machine.
So, are you interested in getting one of these machines? If so, you might want to consider the MC1385 by McCulloch—because that’s what we’ll be reviewing today. What can you use it for? How well does it work? Are there any cons that you should know of? Find out by reading the rest of the post!
The McCulloch MC1385 Deluxe Canister Steam Cleaner
McCulloch is a company that specializes in power tools. Aside from chainsaws, which they’ve manufactured since the 1940s, they also sell lawn mowers, leaf blowers, grass trimmers, brush cutters, and steam cleaners.
The McCulloch MC1385 Deluxe Steam Cleaner is a multi-purpose machine that allows you to clean various surfaces including furniture, wheels, lawn equipment, appliances, and most flooring. Packed with plenty of power, it’s capable of heating water up to over 200 degrees, which makes it ideal for sanitizing. What’s more, is that it comes with a large capacity tank. In other words, you’ll be able to blast away dirt and grime without having to constantly refill the machine. As if that wasn’t enough, it also comes with over two dozen accessories including a scraper and a squeegee.
Here’s what you’ll get with the McCulloch MC1385:
- Deluxe Canister Steam Cleaner
- 1 Large Mop Head
- 1 Microfiber Mop Pad
- 1 Scrubbing Mop Pad
- 1 Fill Cup
- 1 Storage Bag
- Over 20 Accessory Tools
Assembly: Insert one of the extension wands onto the steam nozzle; it should snap in place once you rotate it. From there, attach the other extension wand to the first wand. Next, align the mop head with the open end of the extension wand. Press down on the yellow button until it snaps through the hole. Afterward, align the mop head with the bristle brush attachment. All that’s left then is to lay a microfiber pad onto the mop head.
First things first, the water tank is part of the steam cleaner. To fill it up, simply twist open the cap that’s on top of the machine. Make sure to only use water, otherwise, you can damage the components.
As for the mop pads, you get two types—a microfiber one for regular cleaning and a scrubbing one for stubborn stains. As it is, they both go onto the head exactly the same way. If anything, the most important thing is to make sure that the two fastener strips are facing upward. Do that, and they will adhere to the pad grips on the bottom of the mop head.
As far as accessories go, it comes with a lot. For one thing, it comes with a small fill cup that you can use to add water to the tank (make sure not to lose it). Aside from that, you also get a triangle brush, a jet nozzle, a scrapper, a squeegee, a bristle brush, and more. Of course, it also comes with a storage bag so that you can keep everything together.
The construction of the machine matters. After all, that will determine how long you’ll be able to use it. The last thing that you want to do is to spend a couple hundred bucks on something that’ll only last you a couple of weeks. That’s why we always recommend that you go check out a product in person first, before making a purchase. That way, there won’t be any surprises about its build quality.
In terms of the McCulloch MC1385, its construction could be a bit better. For one thing, it’s mostly made of plastic (the only exception being the poles of the handles, which are made out of metal so there’s that). The same thing goes for all of the accessory tools that it comes with—that is, they’re also plastic.
The pads are also a good thickness (both the microfiber and scrubbing cloths). They’re a good size and fit the mop head well; they’re also effective at cleaning the floor. The fastener strips are also strong enough so that the pads won’t fall off when you’re using the steam cleaner.
Unfortunately, the McCulloch MC1385 does have a few drawbacks. Here’s what you need to know.
It’s Hard to Know How Much Water Is Left
Unfortunately, there’s no way to determine how much water is left in the tank; there’s no window or anything that you can look through. The only way to know that you’re running low on water is to use the machine until it starts to “wheezes.” Also, the hole for the tank is on the small side so you’ll definitely want to use the cup that they provide you with.
The Storage Bag Could Be Better Quality
They give you a storage bag for the accessory tools, however, its quality is average at best. For one thing, some of the pieces can actually fall out. There’s no zipper or velcro to ensure that they stay in place.
The Accessory Tools Aren’t Very Durable
Unfortunately, the accessory tools aren’t the best in terms of quality. For example, some people have mentioned that the brushes tend to bend after a few uses. Even if you want to get a replacement, they’re not easily found.
It Can Be A Bit Bulky
The MC1385 isn’t exactly a small, compact machine. If anything, it’s on the bulky side so you will need a space to store it. Also, it can be heavy to lug around, especially if you have stairs in the house.
The Mop Head Has a Design Issue
There’s an issue with a mop head where it will “break” after extended use. More specifically, it’ll detach itself from the flexible hose that delivers the steam. The good news is that the manufacturer does have a new model that they can send you if you’re experiencing this issue.
It Gets Pretty Hot
The long, flexible tubes that attach to the mop head can become very hot because of the steam. The same thing for the handle. Given that, you may want to give the cleaner a break every once in a while. It’ll lower your chance of accidentally burning yourself.
It Can Fall Over Easily
The machine isn’t very “balanced” in that it can and will tip over if you’re not careful—this is especially true if your hose is stretched out all the way. Seeing as how it spits out hot steam, this can easily be a hazard if you’re not careful.
It Has a Low PSI
Despite being advertised as a machine with a max PSI of 60, it actually has a PSI of 29-30, according to the manual. Every couple of minutes, the pressure will also drop; to get it back up, you’ll have to wait another few minutes.
Does It Clean Well?
The MC1385 puts out a good amount of steam—enough to get rid of grime and stains. Depending on the surface, it may even help loosen caked-on crud. The only problem is the accessories. Like we said earlier, they’re not the most durable. Made of plastic, they simply aren’t able to hold up against the hot water vapor that comes out from the nozzle. Fortunately, that’s not the case with all the tools. For instance, the mop head and pads seem to work relatively well.
Speaking of the pads, they’re also machine washable. In other words, you can pop them in the washer for a quick wash after mopping the floor.
Who Would We Recommend the McCulloch MC1385 Steam Cleaner To?
- People who want to steam clean their floors
- People who are looking for a versatile machine that can be used for multiple surfaces
Cost and Pricing Information
The McCulloch MC1385 Deluxe Steam Cleaner retails for $259.99 so it’s not exactly cheap (though it does go on sale sometimes). With that said, you have to remember that it’s not just a steam mop. That is, you can use it for other things as well and that’s reflected in the price. Fortunately, however, shipping is free via Amazon. In fact, returns are also included if you happen to change your mind.
As far as replacement parts go, you can find them on McCulloch’s official website (they might not all be available on Amazon). Depending on what you get, it can range anywhere from $10 to $30+.
The McCulloch MC1385 is a versatile steam cleaner that can be used for floors, windows, counters, furniture, cooktops, and more. While it takes a few minutes to heat up, the steam is hot enough to both kill germs and remove grime. The water tank is also a good size so that you don’t have to keep refilling. The only drawback is its plastic construction. Sure, it might be lightweight, but that’s not always a good thing. For starters, it can tip over easily if you’re not careful, especially if the hose is extended all the way. On top of that, the accessory tools that it comes with aren’t that durable. So you might want to consider that before making a purchase.
