The McCulloch MC1375 Canister Steam Cleaner

McCulloch is a company that’s mainly known for their outdoor power tools (e.g. chainsaws, grass trimmers, leaf blowers, lawnmowers, etc). With that said, they also sell a variety of steam cleaners. In fact, they offer multiple models including a handheld unit, portable unit, and canister unit, all of which you can buy from their official website.

Product Description

The McCulloch MC1375 Canister Steam Cleaner is a multi-purpose steam cleaner that you can use for both cleaning and mopping. For example, you can use it to eliminate grass and stains from tile, sealed wood flooring, granite, laminate, grills, appliances, and more. What’s more, is that it comes with a control dial. In other words, you can control the exact amount of steam that comes out from the machine. Plus, it comes with a 10-feet insulated hose so that you can easily reach different areas.

What’s Included In The Box?

Here’s a list of everything that you’ll get with the steam cleaner:

  • 1 Canister Steam Cleaner
  • 1 Large Mop Head
  • 2 Extension Wands
  • 20 Different Accessories
  • 4 Mop Pads

Assembly: Select one of the extension wands and insert the end onto the steam nozzle. Rotate the wand slightly and it should snap into the hole. Once you’ve done that, you can attach the remaining extension wand to the first wand. From there, you can attach the mop head by aligning it with the open end of the extension wand. There are a couple of fastener strips that will secure the microfiber pads in place.

First, let’s take a look at the canister itself. As you can see from the image, it features several things including a pressure gauge, boiler cap, steam trigger lock, steam trigger, and steam knob. There’s also a handle at the top for easy carrying.

And as far as mop pads go, (for those who are interested in using the steam cleaner for mopping), it comes with three different types—a microfiber mop pad, a scrubbing mop pad, and a round scrub pad.

Finally, the accessories. As listed above, the steam cleaner comes with various brushes including a triangle brush, bristle brush, large brush, brass utility brush, round brush, and nylon utility brush, all of which attach to the wand. Plus, there’s a fill cup that you can use to fill the boiler with. And they also give you an accessory net and storage bag that you can use to keep everything together. That way, you won’t have to worry about misplacing anything!

Build Quality

The McCulloch Canister Steam Cleaner itself is fairly well built. Sure, it’s made out of plastic but it’s a thick, durable plastic that’s resistant to heat. The attachments, however, are made of lower-grade plastic (except the metal brushes) so they can wear out over time.

As for the mop pads, they’re made of a microfiber material, which makes them soft, absorbent, and non-abrasive. On top of that, they’re washable so you can reuse them over and over again instead of having to constantly buy refills.

Pros of the McCulloch Canister Steam Cleaner

  • The unit heats up very quickly (<10 minutes) and maintains pressure well even with constant use
  • The water tank is large enough so that you won’t have to constantly refill it while you’re cleaning (it provides approx 60 minutes of steam)
  • The steam is very powerful (up to 58 PSI), which makes it easy to remove stains. Plus, there’s an analog dial that shows you the pressure
  • You can control the steam flow with the dial on the main body
  • The steam cleaner has wheels, which makes it easy to move around
  • The power cord and hose are very long, which gives you a good amount of reach
  • Highly versatile—you can use it clean almost any type of surface

A Few Drawbacks

Like all steam cleaners, however, it does have a few drawbacks. Here are some of the main issues according to customer reviews:

Accessory Brushes Aren’t Very Secure

The accessory brushes aren’t very secure in that they’re simply inserted into the end of the wand. Because of this, it tends to fall off if you’re scrubbing and if you’re not careful, you can easily hurt yourself with the steam that’s coming out of the end.

No Storage For the Cord

The steam cleaner comes with a long 10-feet hose and while it’s convenient for reaching different areas, there’s no place to store it. In other words, you’ll have a mess of cords and whatnot behind you while you’re using the device.

It Can Push Out Water

The machine has a tendency of spitting out water for the first few seconds when you power it on. To prevent it from damaging your floors, we recommend placing a towel underneath.

Accessories Aren’t Very Durable

We mentioned this earlier but the accessories are made of a cheaper plastic material, which will actually soften over time if exposed to heat. And eventually, they’ll lose their shape and won’t stick to the wand anymore. In other words, they’ll become useless.

Water Tank Isn’t Removable

The water tank isn’t removable; it’s incorporated into the body of the steam cleaner, which means that you won’t be able to fill it up at the sink. The good news is that they do give you a fill cup so that you can easily add water to the boiler. Keep in mind, however, that there’s no way to see how much water is left from the outside.

Not Very Compact

The steam cleaner doesn’t pack up very well for storage in a closet. For one thing, the power cord and hose dangle off the side of the machine (remember, you can’t wrap it around the unit).

Storage Bag Is Kind of Cheap

The bag that they give you for the attachments is kind of cheap. Also, due to its size, it can be hard to fish out the piece that you want. So it might be better just to provide your own.

Leakage

Leaks are a possibility and given the nature of the device, it can be quite dangerous. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem to be a problem with all units. With that said, there’s always a risk so you want to be careful when you’re using the machine.

Does It Clean Well?

For the most parts, the steam cleaner works well. It heats up quickly and steam pressure is strong enough so that you can tackle various messes on different surfaces. For example, the mop pads work well for cleaning the floor. The other accessories such as the brushes, however, are not the most durable so it’s probably not the best to rely on them solely.

Who Would We Recommend It To?

The steam cleaner is a little bulky and can take up a bit of room. Because of this, we wouldn’t recommend that you get it unless you have the room to store it.

Cost and Pricing Information

The McCulloch Canister Steam Cleaner MC1375 retails for $169.99 so it’s not the most expensive steam cleaner that you can get, but it’s also not the cheapest. Shipping is free, however, if you buy it online so at least you won’t have to worry about that.

Accessories are available from their online shop. More specifically, you can get replacement mop pads and brushes, and depending on what you get, they can cost you anywhere from $6.99 to $19.99 per pack.

Our Take
The McCulloch MC1375 Canister Steam Cleaner is a solid machine minus the accessories. Multi-purpose, you can use it to sanitize various surfaces from sealed hardwood floors to appliances. Plus, the tank is a decent size so you won’t have to keep running back and forth between the sink and the machine. It does have a few cons, though. For one thing, the accessories are not the best in terms of quality. Also, there’s no place to store the hose/cord so you will inevitably end up with a tangled mess when you’re cleaning. And because of that, it can take a bit of space to store.
