Hoover Smartwash Automatic Carpet Cleaner Review

Carpet might not be as popular as it used to be but it does have a few benefits. For one thing, it’s much better at insulating the floors (this is especially noticeable during the winter). Not only that, but it’s comfier to sit and walk on. Did we also mention that there are many styles and colors to choose from?

At the same time, however, it does have a few drawbacks. First and foremost, it requires a high level of maintenance. After all, it tends to attract dirt and stains. Similarly, it’s highly susceptible to allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, and mold. If anything, that’s one of the reasons why it’s not recommended for those with allergies or other respiratory issues.

The good news is that you can clean them easily—as long as you have the right tools. Take the vacuum cleaner, for example, it’s an essential item. A carpet cleaner is also a good idea as it’ll allow you to take care of stains and other messes.

Thinking of getting one? How about the Hoover Smartwash? It comes with many features that set it apart from other similar machines—and we’ll be reviewing it in this post. Keep reading to find out whether or not it’s right for you!

The Hoover Smartwash Automatic Carpet Cleaner

Hoover started out as a vacuum cleaner company in the early 1900s. Nowadays, they’ve expanded their brand to include other products such as carpet cleaners, sweepers, and more. If anything, they’re one of the bigger names out there. You can find them at various retailers such as Best Buy, Home Depot, Walmart, and more.

The Hoover Smartwash Carpet Cleaner is designed to remove embedded dirt and debris from your carpets. Featuring automatic cleaning technology, it knows exactly when to wash and when to dry. In other words, all you have to do is maneuver it—you don’t even have to press anything since it’s triggerless. It’s also worth mentioning that it has a low profile foot. This means that you’ll be able to reach under furniture easily to remove stains.

What’s Included

Here’s what you’ll get with the Hoover Smartwash Carpet Cleaner:

  • 1 Water Tank
  • 1 Cleaning Solution Tank
  • 1 Sample Bottle of Cleaning Solution
  • Antimicrobial Pet Tool
  • 1 8 Ft. Hose
  • 1 Accessory Storage Bag

Assembly: The Smartwash Carpet Cleaner doesn’t require that much assembly. Basically, all you have to do is insert the handle into the base—you should hear a click once it’s in the place. From there, you can fill it up and start cleaning!

As you can see in the images, it comes with a water tank that’s incorporated into the body. With that said, it is removable so you can take it out to fill it up (for the best results, use warm water). Similarly, the solution tank, which is located at the back of the unit, is also removable. Simply slide it back into place once you’ve filled it up with cleaner. As listed above, they do provide you with a sample bottle to get started.

In terms of accessories, you also get a 2-in-1 antimicrobial pet tool. What’s more, is that it comes with two types of inserts—one with hard plastic bristles and another with soft silicone bristles. Both are effective at removing fur and stains from various surfaces. For those who are curious, yes, it’s also heated. To use it, you have to attach it to the 8 ft. hose that they provide you with; it allows you to reach a far distance when you’re cleaning.

Finally, there’s the accessory storage bag that you can use to put away the pet tool and hose when they’re not in use.

Build quality

As with most carpet cleaners, the Hoover Smartwash features a plastic construction—that is, the tanks, casing, lids, etc, are all made of plastic. Don’t let that put you off, though. It’s not the cheap, thin plastic that you normally come across. If anything, it’s rather strong. At the same time, it’s also lightweight despite its bulky design.

For those who’re wondering about the handle, it’s made of metal. While we don’t know what kind of metal it is, it seems robust and durable. Not to mention that it’s incorporated well with the rest of the unit. Unless you’re rough handling the machine, you shouldn’t run into any problems with it. Keep in mind, though, that the top of the handle (where the loop is) is made of plastic.

The only thing that could be better is the pet tool. While it does the job, its quality is considerably lower than the rest of the product. For one thing, the trigger is not spring-loaded so it might feel awkward to press. At least the inserts appear well made; they can also be taken out easily for cleaning.

Potential Drawbacks

What’s a carpet cleaner without a few drawbacks, right? Here’s what you need to know.

Suction is Average At Best

The suction power isn’t that great—it could definitely be better. In other words, don’t expect it to pick up big chunks of food from the floor because it won’t. Here’s a tip—use a vacuum first before taking out this carpet cleaner.

The Cord Is Not Very Long

The length of the cord is surprisingly short. To use the machine, you’ll have to replug it multiple times while cleaning one room. If anything, this seems to be a recurring issue with many of Hoover’s recent machines.

Water Tanks Are Small

The clean water tank empties quickly when you’re cleaning. For an average-sized room, you will have to refill it more than once. The same thing goes for the dirty tank. With how small it is, it’ll fill up quickly so you’ll be emptying it a lot—so be prepared for that.

It Isn’t Designed For Long Carpet

The unit works great for short-pile carpet—long carpet, not so much. Even with the double brush, the suction won’t be enough to get the grime out. In fact, it can actually pull out some of the carpet fibers. The same thing goes for rugs…you wouldn’t want to use it if it’s high-pile.

There’s No Wash Only Function

This particular carpet cleaner is known for its automatic features. That is, it’ll shampoo the area when you push forward and vacuum if you pull back. While this can be convenient, it also means that you can’t use it on a “wash only” mode. Not to mention that the feature also makes it tricky to maneuver around corners and edges.

It’s Not Ideal For Stairs

You can use this cleaner for stairs using the hose attachment but it probably won’t be the most efficient. For one thing, you’ll have to drag the body around with you as you go up, which can be cumbersome. The hose doesn’t have a roller or anything either so you’ll have to do all the scrubbing.

The Dry Function Is Good But Not Great

You definitely notice a difference when you use the dry function. With that said, don’t expect it to dry your carpet in a couple of minutes. With the amount of water that it uses, it can take up to a few hours for it to dry completely.

Does It Clean Well?

The Hoover Smartwash takes a little getting used to with it being automatic and all but it does get the job done. One thing to remember is that you want to go slow. After all, it’s not a vacuum, it’s a carpet cleaner. The slower you go, the cleaner the floor will be. With that said, the results you get will depend on the type of carpet that you have aka it works much better on short-pile carpets. As for the pet tool, you can use it to scrub stains off your stairs, upholstery, etc.

Given the capacity of the tanks, it’s probably best suited for small areas. There’s nothing stopping you from using it to clean your entire house but be prepared to do a lot of refilling and emptying. Remember, you also have to wait for the carpet to dry afterward. Even with the heat function, it’ll likely take a few hours.

Who Would I Recommend the Hoover Smartwash To?

  • People who are looking to get stains and spots out of their carpet
  • People who have short-pile carpet in the house
  • People who have enough space to store the machine (it’s rather bulky)
  • People who want a carpet cleaner with a wand tool

Cost and Pricing Information

The Hoover Smartwash Carpet Cleaner is one of the “fancier” models offered by the company. Given that, it’s not surprising to know that it has a price tag of $249.99. If you’re lucky, however, you might be able to grab it on sale. In fact, it’s currently discounted to $199 at the time of this writing. If you buy it on Amazon, it also has free shipping and free returns.

Once you run out of the sample solution (it won’t last you that long), you’ll have to buy a bottle of their cleaning solution. As you can imagine, they’re not particularly cheap. You’re looking at around $20 for a bottle. The good news is that it’s used with water so you shouldn’t need a refill for a while. Still, it’s something extra that you have to pay for.

For those who are wondering about replacement parts…Hoover doesn’t actually sell them in their store. Don’t worry, though, you can get them—you just have to contact the company. It’s up to them whether or not they’ll charge you for the parts.

The Hoover Smartwash Carpet Cleaner is unique in that it features automatic cleaning technology. How does it work? It’ll clean the carpet whenever you push the unit forward and vacuum whenever you pull it back. As you can imagine, this can be convenient. However, it does have its downsides. For one thing, it makes it difficult to clean edges and corners. It also means that you won’t be able to use it without the vacuum. Overall, however, it does a decent job of cleaning low-pile carpets. I’d stay away from it if you have high-pile carpets as there are better machines out there that you can use.
