Maintaining clean floors is important for several reasons. For one thing, it helps to keep allergens at bay. The same thing goes for germs, which can cause health problems. On top of all that, it’s better for your floors. Take dirt, for example, it can cause scratches, which would be hard to fix without refinishing.
Thankfully, we’ve got an arsenal of tools that can help us clean. For instance, we can use a vacuum cleaner to remove debris from the floor—all we have to do is plug it in and press a button. Mops are great as well. If anything, they’re a must-have if you have hard floors such as hardwood or tile. They allow you to thoroughly clean the surface with water and soap, something that should be done at least once a week. As you probably know, though, there’s more than one type of mop. Some are simple in design whereas others are “fancier” with more features.
In this post, we’ll be talking about one that falls into the latter category—the Hoover FloorMate Deluxe Hard Floor Cleaner, which is a mop and vacuum, all in one! What does it come with? How many features does it have? Is it durable? Read our review to find out!
The Hoover FloorMate Deluxe Hard Floor Cleaner
Hoover is a well-known brand that’s been around since the 20th century. Aside from mops, they also sell laundry products, carpet, cleaners, and more. Their most popular product of all, however, is their vacuum cleaners. As it is, they offer a variety of models, each of which has its own set of unique features—the FloorMate Deluxe being one of them!
The Hoover FloorMate Deluxe Hard Floor Cleaner is designed to scrub and vacuum. Featuring SpinScrub Technology, it’ll safely wash your hard floors for you with its counter-rotating brushes. From there, it’ll suction up all the dirty water so that your floor will be left dry and shiny. Safe to use for all sealed floors (e.g. ceramic tile, hardwood, laminate, marble, vinyl), it also comes with a dual tank so that the dirty water will always be separate from the clean water.
What Comes With the Floor Cleaner?
Here’s a list of things that are included with the Hoover FloorMate Deluxe Hard Floor Cleaner:
- 1 Floor Cleaner Base
- 1 Upper Handle
- 1 SpinScrub Multi-Floor Brush
- 1 Removable Nozzle
- 1 Bottle of Cleaning Solution
Assembling the Unit
The first step is to attach the upper handle—simply slide it down into the cleaner base. From there, insert the screw and tighten it with a screwdriver. Next, attach the nozzle. To do this, align the two hooks with the two slots in the front of the base.
As listed above, the Hoover FloorMate Deluxe comes with one SpinScrub Multi-Floor Brush. Basically, it’s the thing that’ll be scrubbing the floor. While you only get one set, they are washable so you can reuse them multiple times. To remove the brush assembly, push the two brush release buttons on the side. Once you’ve washed them with mild soap, put them back into the base by aligning the post on the brush block with the bottom of the cleaner.
There’s also the spray nozzle, which delivers cleaner to the brushes. As mentioned above, you do have to attach it manually before using the machine.
Last but not least, the floor cleaner also comes with a bottle of cleaning solution, which you pour into the tank. While it’s attached to the body, you can remove it by pressing on the squeeze release button. From there, you can fill it up at the sink—there’s even a fill line for reference. When you’re done, slide the tank back into place on the cleaner.
Build Quality of the Hoover FloorMate Deluxe Hard Floor Cleaner
When it comes to the construction of mops/cleaners, metal (e.g. aluminum) is always better than plastic. Not only is it lightweight, but it’s also more durable. For one thing, you won’t have to worry about it breaking if you accidentally drop it to the floor.
As for the Hoover FloorMate Deluxe…it’s mostly made of plastic—this includes the springs and clips that you use to snap the brush assembly into place. So yes, there is a chance that it’ll crack if it’s dropped to the floor. Given that, you want to be careful about how you store the unit. Having said all that, it should last you a few years as long as you avoid rough handling.
In terms of the brush assembly, the brushes themselves are of decent quality. The only thing is that the things that you use to put them in place are made from plastic, as mentioned above. If any of them break, the base won’t be able to hold onto the brushes anymore, which will affect its function.
Hoover FloorMate Deluxe Hard Floor Cleaner Cons
The floor cleaner does have some drawbacks—and we’ll be going over them below. That way, you’ll be able to get a better idea of how well it works.
The Cord Is Short
This model is not cordless so you will have to plug it into a wall outlet when you’re cleaning. The only thing is that the cord is not very long at all. Unless you have multiple outlets per room, you’ll likely run into an issue where you won’t be able to reach certain areas of the floor.
Water Tank Falls Over Easily
The water tank will tilt and fall over if it’s not balanced. This seems to be a design issue as it tends to happen whenever it’s more than half full…so be careful when you’re filling it up (tip: make sure to hold it with one hand while you’re pouring in the cleaner with the other hand). The last thing that you want is for it to fall on the floor as the plastic can easily crack!
It’s a Bit Bulky and Awkward
The floor cleaner does the job but it is a bit heavy. Its bulkiness also means that it won’t be able to get into small places (e.g. corners, baseboards, etc)—so you’ll have to clean those areas manually. Similarly, it’s not that great for stairs due to its weight and size.
The FloorMate Deluxe is slow—to the point where it’d be faster just to use a regular mop. Not only is the scrubbing action slow, but the water suction feature is also slow. On top of all that, there’s a delay with the trigger where you have to wait a few seconds for the water to come out after pulling it.
You’ll Need to Refill the Tank
While the machine itself is large, the tank for the cleaner isn’t all that big. In other words, you’ll likely have to refill the tank several times while you’re using it…and that’s not exactly easy due to the wobbling design of the tank.
The Spray System Doesn’t Work That Well
The machine comes with a spray system but it doesn’t work all that well. Aside from the delay, which we already mentioned, it doesn’t release that much water. To efficiently clean the floor, you’d literally have to keep pressing it constantly or carry a spray bottle with you.
You Can’t Control the Spin Brushes
You can’t control how the spin brushes work; there’s no setting or control—it just does its own thing. Because of this, it’s not that great for stains and grout lines. Some people have also reported problems where their brushes stop working after a while.
Design of the On/Off Button
The on/off button is located low on the machine instead of on the handle—you actually have to bend over to press it. It’s also worth mentioning that it’s not a traditional switch. Instead of being an actual button, it’s a “smooth bubble” that you have to press down…and it doesn’t always work.
Does It Clean Well?
The spin brushes spin, but they aren’t that great at scrubbing. Plus, you can’t control their movement so it’s hard to get it to work how you want it to. It might be able to remove dust and dirt, but it’ll have difficulty getting rid of larger debris such as pet hair and food crumbs.
The whole spray nozzle system is also mediocre at best. You won’t have a lot of cleaner to work with unless you keep holding down the trigger or use a spray bottle. Even if it manages to spray water, it won’t suck it all back up so your floors will be left wet.
The bulky design also makes it hard to clean efficiently. You can’t reach corners, nor can you reach underneath furniture. To make things even worse, it’s heavy—so don’t expect to be able to use it for your stairs! Honestly, I’d only recommend it as a supplement to a regular mop and vacuum. Also, make sure that you have enough space to store it before you get it!
Cost and Pricing Information
The Hoover FloorMate Deluxe Hard Floor Cleaner retails for $165.99, which also includes free shipping. Assuming that you buy it from Amazon, there’s also an option to add a 2-year extended protection plan for $21.99. Is it worth the price? It depends on what you expect from the machine. For example, you’re better off getting something else if you want something lightweight that you can use quickly.
Don’t forget, you also have to buy the cleaning solution as well. They give you one bottle to start, but you’ll run out after a while. As far as whether or not you can use vinegar, it’s not recommended as it can end up damaging the cleaner—or more specifically the seals.
The Hoover FloorMate Deluxe Hard Floor Cleaner is not perfect. For one thing, it’s bulky and heavy, which makes it hard to maneuver. The cord is short, the water tank tips easily, and the spray system doesn’t work all that well. Considering all of those flaws, it’s hard to recommend. Function-wise, however, it is able to pick up dust and dirt…but that’s about it. Larger debris will be left on the floor and the same thing for stains. The spin brushes simply don’t have enough power to effectively scrub the floor, despite what the product listing says.
