Let’s face it—the floor can get dirty easily. That’s why it’s so important to vacuum and mop. It prevents grime from building up, which isn’t exactly what you want. Not only is it gross, but it can also harm your health! For one thing, you can breathe it into your lungs, which can cause various problems from wheezing to coughing.
As a general guideline, you want to clean the floor at least once a week. The good news is that it isn’t as tedious as it used to be—after all, there are many cleaning tools that you can use, some of which are more convenient than others. Take spray mops, for example, they come with a trigger that allows you to spray cleaner directly onto the floor…which saves you time!
Electric mops are great as well. Powered by electricity, they’ll do the cleaning for you—you just have to move it around! In fact, the mop that we’ll be reviewing today falls into this category. More specifically, it’s the Gladwell Cordless Electric Mop. How well does it work? Can you also use it to polish the floors? What does it come with? Read our review and you’ll get your answers!
The Gladwell Cordless Electric Mop
Gladwell manufactures a variety of products, all of which are designed to make cleaning quicker and easier. For instance, they sell robot window cleaners, which can be controlled via an app. As for where you can find their items, the company has an official website from which you can make orders. In addition to that, they also have an Amazon store.
The Gladwell Electric Mop is a spinner, scrubber, and waxer—all in one. You can use it on a variety of floor surfaces as well including laminate, marble, tile, vinyl, and sealed hardwood. Powered by dual-spin motors, they’re capable of cleaning at an incredibly fast rate to remove dirt, stains, and grime. Plus, it comes with an LED light, which allows you to light your way while you’re spraying water and solution onto the floor. There are multiple settings and functions as well so that you can tailor it to your needs. The best part of all…it’s cordless. In other words, you can easily move it around the house without having to worry about any cords. Just charge the battery and you’ll be ready to go!
What’s Included With the Electric Mop?
Here’s a list of things that you’ll get out of the box:
- 1 Cordless Electric Mop
- 1 Removable Water Tank
- 2 Mopping Pads
- 2 Waxing Pads
- 1 Instruction Manual
- 1 DC Wall Charger
The entire mop doesn’t fit into a box so you will have to put it together. Don’t worry, it’s very easy. Basically, you just have to connect the parts. You can always refer to the instruction manual if you need to. Once you’ve done that, add the pads (you can choose between the mopping pads and waxing pads).
Next, you have to fill the tank with water/cleaner. The great thing about it is that it’s removable so you don’t have to lift the whole thing to fill it up. You can just take the tank out, and fill it up at the sink. Be careful with the lid as it’s rather fragile.
As listed above, the cordless mop comes with two types of pads—one for mopping and one for waxing. The former is green while the latter is pink with a white frill on the edge. To attach them, line the pads with the circular base on the bottom (you’ll have to use both of them at once). The mechanical head has velcro strips that’ll secure it in place.
Last but not least, you get a charger. For a full charge, it’ll take approximately two hours.
Build Quality of the Gladwell Cordless Electric Mop
Mops vary in terms of quality—that is, some will be built better than others. That’s why you want to do your research before making a purchase; you don’t want there to be any surprises. Generally speaking, you want to choose something with an aluminum stick portion as they tend to be more durable.
…and that’s what the Gladwell Cordless Electric Mop has. Like most mops, however, it does contain plastic. If anything, it’s more plastic than metal. Don’t let that put you off, though. Despite that, it’s fairly high-quality. You can tell that they put a lot of thought into its design.
The circular pads that it comes with are great as well. Like we mentioned earlier, you get two types and they’re both made from microfiber. Not only is the fabric capable of holding onto debris, but it can also be washed and reused. If anything, that’s one of its main benefits—you don’t have to keep buying mop pads. Simply put them in the washer when you’re done with them.
Some Drawbacks with the Gladwell Cordless Electric Mop
The Gladwell Cordless Electric Mop has mainly positive reviews on Amazon. That doesn’t mean that it’s perfect, though. Here are some of its cons:
It’s Easy to Accidently Turn It Off
The mop comes with a spray button that allows you to spray the floor with cleaner…that’s good and all but it’s located right below the power button. If you’re not looking, you can easily get them mixed up and turn your mop off instead of using the spray function. The problem with that is that if you turn the electric mop on/off too often, it might end up breaking.
It Can Be Hard to Control
The way the mop works, the bottom moves in a circular motion—that’s how it cleans. Sometimes, however, it’ll go a little crazy and start moving on its own. Unless you can control it within a few seconds, you’ll have to shut it off to prevent it from bumping into things that are in its path.
It Doesn’t Scrub Very Hard
The mop pads spin—but that’s about it. They won’t actually scrub the floor for you so depending on the type of stain that you’re dealing with, it might not be enough to get it clean. Chances are, you’ll have to scrub it separately with a cloth.
Battery Life is Mediocre At Best
The battery doesn’t last very long. Unless you’re using it for a tiny area, you’ll have to recharge it midway. Given that, it’s probably not the best thing to use if you have a large house. With that said, at least it’s easy to check the battery status with the indicator at the front. As soon as it starts to flash, it’ll need to be recharged.
It Gets Stuck in One Position Sometimes
There seems to be a design flaw where the mop will sometimes get stuck in the upright position. The only way to fix it is to put your foot on the bottom while pulling the handle back. It’s not difficult to do or anything but it can get annoying when it happens for the fifth time while you’re cleaning.
Be Careful With the Water Cap
We mentioned this earlier but the cap for the water container isn’t the most durable. You have to be extremely careful when you’re opening/closing it as it tends to break easily. The good news, though, is that you can contact the company for a replacement.
It Doesn’t Come With a Cleaner
The mop doesn’t come with a cleaning solution. To use it, you’ll have to buy it separately. Alternatively, you can create your own with white vinegar—it seems to work well with the machine.
Does It Clean Well?
The spinning action is enough to remove most dirt, debris, pet hair, etc, from the floor. Keep in mind, however, that you do have to use it with a cleaner for it to work properly. At least you don’t have to push it very hard—it’ll literally move itself across the floor. Like we said earlier, though, it doesn’t actually scrub o it wouldn’t be the best if you want to use it for caked-on messes. Another thing to note is that it doesn’t remove the water/cleaner afterward so your floor will be wet.
The polishing/waxing feature is definitely not as great in comparison. For one thing, many people have mentioned that the machine tends to clog when you’re using it to wax. While you can fix the problem by running the part with hot water, it’s somewhat of a hassle. Considering that, I wouldn’t recommend the electric mop if waxing/polishing is the main feature that you plan on using. There are many better machines for that; this is more for regular cleaning.
To summarize, the Gladwell Cordless Electric Mop does a good job of removing dirt and debris from the floor. It also doesn’t take up that much space either, which makes it good for apartment or condo dwellers.
Cost and Pricing Information
The Gladwell Cordless Electric Mop retails for $169.95. This makes it a little pricier than some of the other spin mops on Amazon, although most people seem satisfied with their purchase. It also comes with free two-day shipping.
Aside from the actual electric mop, you’ll also have to buy a cleaner (unless you plan on using something like vinegar). If you’re looking for something from Gladwell, they have two scents, lemon, and lavender, both of which also function as a polisher. Price-wise, you’re looking at around $13 a bottle (24 ounces). For those who want to save some money, it might be worth it to check out some third-party options.
Last but not least…pad refills. While they’re washable, there will come a time where they’ll need to be replaced (or maybe you just want extras?). For a pack of two, they’ll cost you $10.
The Gladwell Electric Mop allows you to clean and polish the floors. Powered by dual-spin motors, it’s suitable for most surfaces including hardwood, marble, tile, vinyl, and laminate. It also comes with a spray button that allows you to clean more conveniently. Plus, it’s cordless so that makes it that much easier to move around. Keep in mind, however, that it does have a few cons. For starters, it can be hard to control sometimes—it’ll feel like it’s spinning out of control. Despite that, it doesn’t do a very good job of scrubbing the floor so it’s not ideal for caked on messes and stains. Battery life is also mediocre at best but that seems to be the case for most cordless mops.
