Bona Premium Spray Mop Review

Don’t want gunk to accumulate in your house? Then you’ll want to clean on a regular basis. More specifically, you want to mop the floors. How else would you get rid of all the dirt and dust? Remember, it’s not just a matter of aesthetics—a dirty floor can actually affect your wellbeing! For one thing, it can lead to slips and falls. Not to mention that dust can trigger asthma and other respiratory conditions!

Ideally, you want to mop high-traffic areas at least once a week—that will help to keep dirt and allergens at bay. Sure, it might be somewhat of a chore, but your health is worth it. As a matter of fact, mopping has become a lot easier compared to before. For one thing, we no longer have to use a mop and bucket—there are options out there that make the task much more tolerable! Take steam mops, for instance, they allow you to clean and sanitize at the same time. If you don’t mind shelling out a bit more money, you can even get a robot cleaner that’ll mop the house for you!

On this page, however, we’ll be taking a look at a different kind of mop—the ones that come with a jet spray. Surely you’ve heard of them before? If anything, they’re one of the most popular types on the market! After all, they come with a jet spray that simplifies the mopping process. Given that, it’s not surprising to know that there are many brands to choose from—Bona being one of them.

Yup, that’s right, they offer a variety of spray mops, one of which includes the Bona Premium Spray Mop. How well does it work? Is it durable? What kind of cleaning solutions can you use with it? These are some of the things that we’ll be addressing in this post. Keep reading to learn more!

The Bona Premium Spray Mop

Bona started out as a small business that sold floor wax during the 1910s. From there, they eventually started to offer other floor care products such as mop oil and waxing equipment. Fast forward to 2019 and they’ve become an industry leader in hardwood floor care. Aside from mops, they also sell floor cleaners, care kits, dusting cloths, floor polish, and more. Interested in their products? You can find them at various retailers across the country including Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, Target, Walmart, and Lowe’s.

The Bona Premium Spray Mop is specifically designed for linoleum, laminate, vinyl, stone, marble, and tile surfaces. Featuring an extra-large mop head, it cleans up to 40% faster than its competitors. Couple that with its spray feature and you’ve got yourself a powerful cleaning machine! What’s more, is that it comes with a secondary grip, which makes it easy to maneuver around furniture! On top of that, it even comes with a retractable hook. In other words, you won’t have to worry about how to store it!

What’s Included

The Bona Premium Spray Mop comes with everything that you need to start using it. Here’s a quick breakdown of the things that it comes with:

  • 1 Refillable Cartridge
  • 34 oz. Floor Cleaner (included in the cartridge)
  • 1 Machine Washable Microfiber Pad

As indicated above, it comes with one mopping cloth. Made from microfiber, it’s 2.5 times more absorbent than traditional pads! Not only that, but it features two different “zones”. In other words, you’ll be able to trap more dirt and grime with each swipe! To attach it, simply make use of the velcro on the base of the mop head—that will be enough to hold it in place.

On top of that, you’ll also get a refillable cartridge. Ultimately, this is what you’ll be filling up for your mopping sessions. You won’t have to worry about that the first few times, though, since it’ll be pre-filled. Yup, that’s right, it comes with 34 oz. of their Stone Tile & Laminate Floor Cleaner. While it depends on your mopping schedule, chances are, that cleaning solution alone will be enough to last you a while. Once you’re out, you’ll want to get a refill (more on this later).

Assembly

The mop is relatively easy to assemble. Essentially, all you need to do is attach the handle to the main unit. To do this, line the poles up. Once you’ve done that, snap them together—you should hear a “click.” If done properly, there will be tension on the trigger. From there, you want to attach the mop pole to the base—simply align the tabs on the knuckle. Afterwards, put on the microfiber cleaning pad and insert the cartridge (you should see air bubbles). With that, you’re done!

Build Quality

How do you choose a good mop? First and foremost, you want to take a look at its construction. Does the handle seem sturdy? What kind of material is it made out of? These are some of the things that you want to consider. Ideally, you want to go for something that’s built out of aluminium as that tends to last longer than plastic. If possible, take a look at the product for yourself in-store—that way, you’ll be able to get a better feel of what it’s like. At the very least, you want to read up on some of its reviews online!

As far as the Bona Premium Steam Mop goes, it’s not flimsy by any means. Like most mops, it comes with a metal pole that’s reinforced with plastic at the top and in the middle. A little over 5 pounds, it is relatively lightweight, which makes maneuvering a breeze. On top of that, the unit as a whole is quite small and compact. Speaking of which, storage is also easy as it comes with a retractable hook at the top end.

The refillable cartridge system is also welt built. The way it works, you just have to place the bottle on the body of the mop—it snaps in place fairly easily. Unless you have a defective unit, you probably won’t run into any issues. When you’re finished mopping, take out the cartridge and store it separately. Seeing as how the cleaner will be in it, you won’t have to rinse it out or anything.

Next, let’s take a look at their mop pads. Size-wise, they are approximately 17” long and fit perfectly on the head. They might not be super thick, but that doesn’t mean that they’re not absorbent. In fact, they can take up a considerable amount of water. With that said, you’ll probably have to rinse it a few times during your mopping session (debris and whatnot tends to get stuck on it). Perhaps the best part about the pads, however, is that they’re washable. In other words, one will last you a long time. Once you’re finished with your mopping, simply remove it from the velcro and toss it into the washing machine! The microfiber material holds up great even with repeated washes.

Does the pad stay on the mop head? The answer is yes—as long as you attach it properly, anyway. We mentioned this earlier but all you need to do is stick it onto the velcro pad on the bottom of the unit. For what it is, it works well. In other words, it won’t be falling off anytime soon!

Finally, let’s talk about the trigger sprayer. You know, the thing that you use to spray cleaner onto the floor? Located at the top, it releases a decent amount of solution with every squeeze—enough to wipe the area with. You don’t need to apply that much force either. As a matter of fact, too much force can actually cause problems!

Some Possible Issues with the Bona Premium Spray Mop

The Bona Premium Spray Mop is a decent mop. Like most things, however, it does have a few flaws. We’ll be going over some of the common issues that people have run into below. Hopefully, that’ll give you a better idea of what the product is really like.

The Cartridge Can Leak

Some people have experienced leaks with the mop—that is, the cleaning solution can sometimes escape from the cartridge. According to some online reviews, it can happen when you’re mopping or when it’s in storage. If anything, it seems to be a design issue—the solution just has a tendency of leaking out. With that said, it doesn’t seem to be a widespread problem. If anything, this is only an issue with certain units (possibly faulty?).

It Can Leave Streaks on the Floor

The mop does a good job of cleaning the floor but it can also leave streak marks—they are particularly noticeable if you have dark-colored hardwood. At the end of the day, the extent of the marks depends on the type of floor that you have. According to some users, though, you can get rid of the streaks by running the mop over the same area a few times. As you can imagine, however, that can get tedious quickly, especially if you have a large area to mop.

It Can Break With Repeated Use

The mop is relatively sturdy. At the end of the day, however, it does contain plastic parts. What does this mean? It tends to break with repeated use. For instance, you might run into issues where the trigger stops working or the connectors come off altogether. Some people on Amazon have also reported that the two poles tend to fall apart after a while, which renders the spray feature useless.

Keep in mind, however, that no mop will last “forever.” Over time, these tools will break down—it’s just a matter of when.

Does It Clean Well?

The Bona Premium Spray Mop is a decent choice if you have laminate, hardwood, tile, vinyl, or marble. The way they’re designed, the microfiber mop pads pick up a considerable amount of debris—including pet hair. You’ll be surprised at what it can do with just one swipe! At the same time, however, it tends to get dirty quickly (ie. particles will stick to the pad). As a result, you’ll have to rinse it frequently while you’re cleaning (unless you decide to buy and use extra pads).

In terms of the sprayer, it will wet the floor with a considerable amount of cleaning solution. Not only does the liquid go a good distance but it covers a wide area as well. Once you’ve pressed the trigger, all you have to do is give the floor a good swipe and it’ll be as good as new (assuming that you don’t run into any streaks).

All in all, the mop gets the job done. Not only is the sprayer easy to use but the microfiber pads work great! If anything, the only issue is that you’ll have to clean the pads often while you’re mopping. Fortunately, however, the way it’s designed, you can just stick and rinse the mop head in a bucket.

Cost and Pricing Information

The Bona Premium Spray Mop is quite affordable as far as mops go. Currently, it’s listed for $39.99 on Amazon, which is in the ballpark of most spray mops. Of course, that also includes Prime two-day shipping. If you’re not in a rush, you might even be able to snag it when it’s on sale! Not sure whether or not it’ll be right for you? Don’t worry—there are free returns as well.

As far as refills go, there are two things that’ll need to get—the microfiber cleaning pads and floor cleaner solution. Given that they provide you with both out of the box, however, you probably won’t need to get any for a while. Even when you do, they’re not that expensive. Take their cleaning pads, for instance—a pack of three goes for $17.49, which works out to under $6 each. Want to get more bang for your buck? Then consider getting mop pads from a third-party brand (there are many on Amazon).  Yup, there are many other options out there, most of which are cheaper—you just have to look around. Chances are, they’ll work just as well as the originals.

In terms of the floor cleaner, you can get a 128 oz. bottle for ~$18. Keep in mind, though, that while it’s recommended, you don’t have to use the Bona Cleaner. You can just as easily make your own cleaning solution with water and vinegar. In fact, you can even just use water if you’re not tackling a tough stain! You just have to make sure that you pour it into their refillable cartridge. Need a new one? You can get one from Amazon for $8.99.

Our Take
The Bona Premium Spray Mop is a solid choice if you’re looking for something for your hard floors. Equipped with an extra-large mop head, you’ll be able to clean much faster compared to other mops! Not only that, but the spray jet works well. Simply squeeze the trigger and you’ll be able to apply just the right amount of cleaner to the floor. There are a few things that you want to be aware of, though. For instance, some people have experiences leaks with the cartridge. There are also reports of streaks and breakage with repeated use. If you’re able to look past that, though, it’s a decent mop to have!
