Messes are inevitable sometimes. Whether we like it or not, we’re going to come across them on a regular basis. For instance, you might accidentally knock over that cup of milk or spill your bowl of cereal. When that happens, you want something that’s both sturdy and reliable to clean up the floor. Enter the mop. A brilliant invention as I’m sure you’d all agree, this handy tool allows us to wipe and cleanse with ease. Why clean everything up with paper towels when you can just use a designated piece of equipment?
As you probably know, there are many brands of mops out there in the market—from well-known brands such as Swiffer and Rubbermaid, to well, some not so well-known brands. On this particular page, though, we will be taking a look at one of the products made by Bissell. More specifically, we will be checking out their Spinwave mop, which as its name implies, spins to clean. How good is it really at spinning away dirt and debris? Should you use it for your home? These are some of the things that we’ll be addressing below. Be sure to stick around if that’s something you’re interested in!
The Bissell Spinwave Mop
Bissell was founded by Melville Biselle, the inventor of the carpet sweeper, in 1876. Based in Michigan, the trusted brand is known for a variety of housecleaning products from vacuum cleaners to carpet shampoo. Over the past decade, they’ve also moved into the pet care industry with various products that are specifically designed to clean up pet stains and hair. Naturally, they have an impressive selection of mops as well—just take a look at their website!
The Bissell Spinwave is a powerful tool that does all of the mopping for you. No longer do you have to manually scrub your floors—for this versatile machine is designed to get you out of all kinds of messes. Safe for cleaning hard-surfaced floors, the mop can be used on tile, vinyl flooring, hardwood, linoleum, and more. In addition to power spin pads, which clean effortlessly, it also comes with a set of soft cleaning pads that are perfect for everyday use. Not only that, but the mop is equipped with an on-demand spray that dispenses just the right amount of cleaning solution each time. Did we also mention that it features swivel steering? With it, maneuvring around and under furniture will be a breeze!
As you can expect, the Bissell Spinwave comes with a variety of things out of the box. These include:
Essentially, you’ll be good to go with everything that’s included with the package. Simply fill in the water tank, attach the pads, add some of the multi-surface solution, and you’re set! If anything, it’ll be a while before you’ll need to repurchase some of the things. After all, it comes with two large bottles of solution, as well two pairs of reusable pads, the latter of which can be tossed into the wash after each use (trust me, they’ll be grey by the time you’re done cleaning).
As with most products, the build of the item is extremely important when it comes to durability. At the end of the day, nobody wants to use something that will fall apart with just a few uses. When it comes to mops, you have to take into consideration both the materials that were used, as well as the quality of the manufacturing process. Generally, you’d want something that’s constructed out of aluminium as it tends to be lightweight and sturdy. Unfortunately, though, that’s not always the case.
In fact, it’ d be a mistake to assume that all mops are built equally. Sure, the higher and lower-quality ones may appear similar at first glance, but you’d quickly notice the difference after putting them to use. For instance, it’s not uncommon for mops that are made out of cheaper materials to perform poorly or even worse—stop working after a few sessions. Why invest in a lesser product when you can buy one that’s superior?
The Bissell Spinwave is unique in that it’s made out of both plastic and metal; more specifically, the “stick” portion is metal, while the top of the handle is reinforced with white plastic. Unfortunately, though, it’s hard to tell exactly what kind of alloy is used as it doesn’t specify anywhere in the official website or in the user manual. Given how lightweight it is, though, we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s constructed out of aluminium. With that said, however, the frame of the machine does makes it lean somewhat forward when standing—this might be something to consider when you’re thinking about where to store the Bissell. In terms of assembly though, everything is quite straightforward—just attach the handle and pads to the Spinwave.
As far as the body of the unit goes, it’s made out of plastic. While that might not be ideal per se, it does the job nicely (a plastic portion is also necessary to hold the water and cleanser solution). Also, the base is heavy. Don’t misunderstand though, that’s actually a good thing; what this means is that the mop will literally run itself without you having to put any weight into it (those who’ve used a strong vacuum before will know what I’m talking about).
To get started, simply pour water into the reservoir, and add a bit of the cleaning solution. From there, turn it on and let it work its magic. If you’re anything like me, though, it might take a while for you to get used to the positioning of the buttons as the power button is below the spraying button.
Some Possible Issues with the Bissell Spinwave
How robust is the Bissell Spinwave? For the most parts, it gets the job done. However, some people have expressed that it tends to stop spinning after a while. Understandably, this can be frustrating, especially since that is the mop’s main highlight! Don’t fret though, there are ways to troubleshoot the problem. For instance, it may help to reinstall the pads at the bottom as the machine can stop turning if they’re installed incorrectly. In addition to that, it’s important to make sure that the mop is properly reclined and not standing upright, as the latter will hinder its ability to spin.
Another thing that might pose an issue is the pads, which are relatively thin. Depending on your definition of absorbent, you might find that they’re not capable of holding too much liquid. People do seem to agree that they are good for polishing the floors though. Here’s a tip—if you find that the pads are leaving circles on the floor, you’re probably not using enough cleanser, or using the wrong product.
Sometimes, you might also have an issue with the machine not turning on. Don’t worry though—cases like these are fairly rare; it’s important to note, however, that it can happen. Whether it is caused by a design flaw or a QC problem is hard to tell though. Fortunately, Bissell does offer a two-year limited warranty with their products. To be covered under it, you’ll need to register your product through their official website (you’ll need to submit various information such as the mop’s serial number and model) beforehand, unless you purchased it directly from them online. If you kept the receipt, you might also be able to return or exchange it for a different one at the store.
Does it Clean Well?
First things first, before using the Bissell Spinwave, it’s important to sweep or vacuum the floor to get rid of dust and debris. If you skip this step, the machine won’t be able to clean as well as it can (it’ll just kick around the particles).
This particular mop is unique in that it comes with an on-demand spray at the bottom. One of its highlights, it plays an important role at cleaning up various messes. After pouring in water and cleanser (at the right ratio) into the reservoir, you can dispense some of the solution by pressing on the spraying button on the handle. When you do, a certain amount of the cleaning fluid will come out. From there, the pads at the bottom will use the fluid to clean the floor. Personally, the spray is one of my favourite features of the Bissell Spinwave—it’s just simple and easy to use.
In regards to its cleaning ability, the Bissell works great—especially on kitchen floors and bathroom tiles. As mentioned earlier, it will literally “pull itself” through the floor, during which it’ll mop and clean the surface. If there’s a particular spot that needs attention, simply press the spray cleaner button a few times for some extra cleaning liquid. Afterwards, just keep the machine there for a few seconds and you’re good. For hardwood floors, you’ll have to be sure to “rub” it well enough to remove the excess cleaning solution; it’s worth the effort though—you’ll be surprised at just how shiny your floor will be!
The only thing is, that it can be difficult to maneuver around carpet edges. If you’re not careful, the wires will also get caught in the spinner, which will involve you having to turn the Bissell off to get it out—it’s easy to avoid this though by putting plenty of room between yourself and the cord (which, I have to add, is long enough to clean an entire living room!).
For those of you who have dogs or cats, you’ll be happy to know that Bissell is also wonderful at picking up pet hair. As a matter of fact, the cleanser itself is pet-friendly (it smells pretty decent too, for a cleaning solution). Aside from that, it’s good for spills, dirt, dust—you name it. Just be sure to wash the pads after every use, you wouldn’t want to be cleaning the floors with something that’s dirty!
With how compact the Bissell Spinwave is, it’d be great for those who are living in apartments, condos—even studios. If you’re looking for something that you can use for large areas outdoors, however, you might want to go for a bigger model. Outside of the home, the mop can also be used in schools (let’s face it, messes will be inevitable in the classroom) and office buildings.
Cost and Pricing Information
The Bissell Spinwave is one of the company’s mid-range products. Currently, you can get it for $99.99 on their official website (for those who are interested, they do have a program where you can pay in monthly installments). On Amazon, though, you can get it for a little bit cheaper at $95. Sure, there are some that are more affordable, but you might need to sacrifice some things for the price such as battery life.
If you want to buy additional mop pads, it’ll cost you anywhere from $12.99 for a two-pack or $19.99 for a four-pack. If you don’t mind using an off-brand, there are also some cheaper options on Amazon. Seeing as how the pads themselves are washable though, you probably won’t need to buy any for at least a few years (that is, unless you’ve misplaced them).
The multi-surface formula should also last you a while as you only need to use a bit each time (you fill it to the second fill line on the reservoir). When it comes time to buy more refill, you can purchase a three-pack of 32 oz. bottles (that’s nearly 3 litres of solution!) for $29.999 from Bissell’s official website. As far as we can tell, it’ll actually cost you more on Amazon as two 32 oz. bottles sell for over $30. While there’s nothing to say that you can’t use other cleansers, Bissell recommends that you use their formula as others can damage the spray mechanism. If you’re not a fan of the multi-surface liquid, you can also opt for just water and vinegar.
In need of some replacement parts? If so, head on over to Bissell’s official website. Fortunately, they are not too expensive—the most pricey being the water tank assembly at $17.99. Certain parts can also be found on Amazon, just double check to make sure that they’re for the correct model!
Overall, you get what you pay for. It might not be the best mop out there, but it definitely gets the job done. If, by chance, you run into issues, give the user manual a read—there’s an entire section dedicated to troubleshooting.
Bissell Spinwave Overall – Is It Worth It?
The Bissell Spinwave is a solid choice if you’re looking for a spin mop. While it contains many plastic parts, it does what it’s designed to do—clean. Lightweight and easy to use, the machine is a great choice for those who are living in apartments and houses. As with most electronics, though, you may find yourself running into a few minor issues. Luckily, most of these can be fixed with proper troubleshooting (refer to the user manual). At its price point, there aren’t too many spin mops that are comparable to the Spinwave.
